VISTA Blackwatch is currently one of the top ranked teams in Virginia (Blackwatch andVirginia Ranking). Our team is primarily based out of Burke, Fairfax and Clifton, but draw players from West Springfield, Centreville, Herndon, Reston and Manassas. We currently compete in Division 2 of the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL), and compete in State Cup as well as numerous high-visibility, showcase tournaments.
VISTA Blackwatch's head coach is Evangelos (Angie) Stoyas, VISTA's President. Angie played soccer collegiately (University of Pittsburgh) and afterwards played professionally and semi-professionally in Greece and elsewhere. During his 30+ years of coaching, his teams have won numerous NCSL D1 League Championships, eight Virginia State Cup Championships, one Regional Championship and two Regional runner-ups, and has finished as high as 4th at Nationals. He has placed over 25 boys in NCAA 1st Division Teams, and 2 have gone on to play professionally. He is an A-licensed coach, and in the past has been the Head Coach for the Olympic Development Program's Northern District, the Coach for the Virginia U-13, U-15 and U18 State Teams, and has been a scout for the U.S. Men's National and Olympic Soccer Teams.
Our assistant coaches are Pete England and Mike Brennan. Pete has coached teams in the Northern Virginia area and at West Springfield High School, and has placed numerous boys onto NCAA 1st Division Teams, including a son who won the National Championship while at Clemson University. Mike is a native of Northern Virginia, graduating from Annandale H.S., the University of Virginia, and Georgetown University; has coached teams for Burke AC and VISTA; and was the primary coach of VISTA Blackwatch from U10-U12.
Our team strives to play an effective and attractive ball control style. We promote individual ability in holding the ball. Defensively, we strive for team organization and discipline, with crisp passing out of the back. Offensively, we strive for movement off of the ball, and getting the ball to the appropriate player at the right time -- who is then free to express their individual attacking abilities.
Our goal is to create a team focused on:
- Successful and attractive soccer, e.g., continuing to acquire and master individual skills as well as efficient team play
- Positive coaching, e.g., teaching skills to be successful on the field and in life; promoting an understanding of competition and a desire to compete; fostering positive team dynamics and friendships
- Keeping costs of travel soccer more reasonable and transparent
- To have fun – both the boys and their families
